Indigenous Project and Engagement Liaison (MMIWG2S+), Job #51801

In a partnership between the Indigenous Relations Office, the Edmonton 2 Spirit Society, and Fireweed Kinship Society), and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Two Spirit (MMIWG2S+) Action Plan, the City of Edmonton is seeking two Indigenous Project and Engagement Liaisons.

The National Inquiry’s Final Report reveals that persistent and deliberate human and Indigenous rights violations and abuses are the root cause behind Canada’s staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people. Through the creation of these roles, the City is prioritizing deliberate actions to address issues related to the human and Indigenous rights violations against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA individuals.

These positions provide a unique opportunity to collaborate with multiple organizations on projects that support Indigenous communities. These positions will support community engagement initiatives focused on enhancing the culture and well-being of Indigenous women and/or Two-Spirit individuals. Primary responsibilities include facilitating projects that create positive environments and promote cultural resurgence within these communities. Additionally, these positions will contribute to the empowerment of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA individuals to reclaim their roles, cultural practices, and language within their respective communities.

These positions provide valuable experience in both municipal government and community-based work. During the first half of the assignment, you will work within the Indigenous Relations Office, providing you with valuable experience in a municipal government setting. In the second half of the assignment, you will work with our partner organizations, allowing you to gain valuable community-based experience.

What will you do?

  • Engage with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and representatives from the City of Edmonton and community partners to work collaboratively towards identified priorities and needs
  • Build and maintain good working relationships with community partners through regular communication and attending community events
  • Support community driven initiatives and community organizational development through grant writing, research, and engagement events. Identify and summarize research, policies, and data from other municipalities
  • Contribute to research papers, presentations, publications, and knowledge translation materials
  • Develop, manage, and monitor project management materials for assigned tasks and responsibilities
  • Contribute to status reports, summaries and funding reports
  • Support data collection and analysis
  • Research follow-up grant opportunities and support grant application development and reporting
  • Participate in planning meetings with project teams
  • Support event planning and delivery
  • Produce three to four creative or written works reflecting on the internship experience and learning. The format of these pieces will be determined in consultation with the City of Edmonton and community partners. The creative works could include digital media, visual arts or other materials

Qualifications:

  • Relevant lived experience with Indigenous communities within the Canadian context, working with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, two-spirited communities, and Indigenous peoples is required. Applicants are encouraged to describe how their lived experience may be relevant to this role in their cover letter
  • Applicants identifying as an Indigenous woman and/or 2SLGBTQQIA is highly valued as it allows individuals to have a deep understanding of the unique challenges and needs of Indigenous communities and fosters a more inclusive and culturally sensitive approach to community engagement and support
  • Completion of one year of a diploma and/or degree program, including one year of relevant experience
  • Previous experience building and maintaining positive relationships with Indigenous partners and community Experience with engaging in meaningful dialogue and sharing stories with respect, acknowledging the interconnectedness of all beings and drawing upon Indigenous ways of knowing through both spoken and written communication
  • Develop and manage basic processes for document creation, funding processes, complex projects and event management.

Assets:

  • One year of experience working in an office environment
  • Experience using Google suite (ex: Gmail, Docs, Sheets)
  • Experience with document creation and/or report preparation
  • Post secondary experience in areas such as Indigenous studies, social science, social work, human ecology, gender studies or related field
  • Experience with Gender Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) Previous experience providing advice, policy development or research on Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action
  • Knowledge of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Calls for Justice, Speaking and understanding an Indigenous Language.

Skills required for success:

  • A significant knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, practices, communities, history, culture and current environment
  • Understanding of Indigenous governance systems and structures
  • Oral and written communication skills Your ability to build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities through culturally safe practices
  • Your ability to plan, coordinate and provide support to complex projects, documents, and events
  • Your ability to develop processes for document creation, funding processes and event management
  • Your ability to manage multiple, competing priorities to achieve optimal results

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and any costs associated with this requirement will be reimbursed.

Work Environment:

  • This position will be required to occasionally work evenings and weekends to attend community events
  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
