Two Indigenous leaders receive honorary degrees

Doctor of Laws is bestowed upon individuals whose notable achievements and community service merit recognition.

The University of Calgary presented an honorary Doctor of Laws to Senator Murray Sinclair at its June 5 convocation ceremony for the Cumming School of Medicine, Haskayne School of Business, Schulich School of Engineering, Werklund School of Education and the faculties of Arts, Environmental Design, Graduate Studies, Kinesiology, Law, Nursing, Science, Social Work and Veterinary Medicine.

Sinclair was chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and one of Canada’s first Indigenous judges. The University of Calgary's highest academic honour, the Doctor of Laws, is bestowed upon individuals whose notable achievements and community service merit recognition.

On June 7, Mary Simon, a special representative to the minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs on Arctic issues, an Indigenous rights activist, former president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, and co-creator of the Arctic Council, will also be presented with an honourary degree, as will news anchor Peter Mansbridge and bestselling author Jay Ingram.
