War has been declared. Cultural heritage clashes with corporate interests in SEEDS - the witty horror film (with a surprisingly wicked sense of humor) written, directed by, and starring Kaniehtiio Horn. The film is opening in theatres across Canada on October 25.

While SEEDS is her feature directorial debut, Horn, who hails from Kahnawàke Mohawk Territory, is no stranger to the screen - having starred as Deer Lady in Reservation Dogs, Tanis in Letterkenny, and Tess in Alice, Darling (which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022). After establishing herself as a formidable supporting actor, Horn was poised to step into both the director’s chair and as the star in her first feature.

In the film, Ziggy – the 30-something influencer savvy enough to land a brand deal with corporate conglomerate Nature’s Oath – is spunky, charming, and everything Horn naturally exudes. She thrives as an influencer, but her character feels truly at home at the rez, especially with the nonstop banter she shares with her cousin, played by the charismatic Dallas Goldtooth (Reservation Dogs). The dynamic cast also includes the esteemed Graham Greene (The Green Mile, Wind River) who plays none other than Ziggy’s enigmatic uncle, guiding her through prophetic dreams.

What really sets SEEDS apart is how it leans into natural humour, something Horn has noted as intrinsic to Indigenous culture and something she was eager to showcase in the film. SEEDS has a lot of laughs that keep you engaged throughout the time spent getting to know Ziggy, her family, and her eventual fate.

“I want to be known for being an incredible actor. That’s the bottom line. I want people to think I’m really, really good. I want to be able to tell any story — as long as there’s meat to it or I’m making people laugh.” - Kaniehtiio Horn (Elle Canada)

While Horn indeed wants you to belly laugh, SEEDS also serves as a fantastic medium for larger conversations. In a world where social media often dictates our self-worth, would we rather find comfort in our likes or confront our legacy? With the rise of consumerism, what parts of our identities can mega-corporations exploit for profit? SEEDS grapples with these questions, offering plenty of lighthearted moments in between. It cements itself as a humorous vehicle for serious commentary, making it accessible while challenging viewers to reflect on the implications of their choices.

With iconic rez humor, sharp social commentary, and a perfect blend of genres, SEEDS proves to be one of the most compelling new movies in theaters, with its release on October 25th.

Join us to witness the brilliant debut of Tiio Horn as a feature film director and celebrate a film that encapsulates the spirit of resilience, humour, and the fight for cultural preservation. SEEDS is a must-see for anyone who wants a horror movie with laughs, scares, and some good entertainment.
