On July 25, the First Nations at Maskawacis in Alberta welcomed Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, on the first stop on his visit to Canada. There he delivered an apology for Christian involvement in the residential school system and the harms and abuses Indigenous children, families and communities suffered in that system.
He stopped and prayed at the Ermineskin cemetary where there are marked and unmarked graves, and stopped at the site of the former residential school where five tipis stand and where when he had a moment of silence.
