Specific and comprehensive land claims subject of public hearings

Committee wants to understand the issues that affect the negotiation and implementation of specific claims and comprehensive land claims (including self-government agreements).

 

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs will hold public hearings from Sept. 25 to Sept. 29 in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Quebec City and Belleville, Ont. to better understand the issues that affect the negotiation and implementation of specific claims and comprehensive land claims (including self-government agreements).

 

The committee also wants to understand the outcomes and impacts of the negotiations and implementation for Indigenous communities.

Committee Chair MaryAnn Mihychuk will be joined by vice-chairs, Cathy McLeod, and Romeo Saganash and committee members, Gary Anandasangaree, Mike Bossio, T.J. Harvey, William Amos and Kevin Waugh.

The hearings will be held at the following locations:

Vancouver, British Columbia: Coast Tsawwassen Inn (Delta, British Columbia) at 9:00 a.m.

Winnipeg, Manitoba: Homewood Suites by Hilton Winnipeg Airport at 8:00 a.m.

Quebec City, Quebec: Palace Royal at 8:00 a.m.

Belleville, Ontario: Belleville Travelodge Hotel at 8:00 a.m.

The Committee will continue to study the matter over the fall. Interested individuals or groups may submit written briefs for the committee’s consideration. Those interested in submitting a brief or a comment can do so online though the committee’s website or by contacting the Committee Clerk at mailto:INAN@parl.gc.ca.

Once received, submissions will be translated into both official languages and posted on the Committee’s website.

The study’s terms of reference can be consulted at the Feb. 21 minutes of proceedings and the May 9 minutes of proceedings.
