Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Elisapie make the long list for Polaris

Summary

Buffy Sainte-Marie and Wab Kinew were among those who helped present todays list from The Forks in Winnipeg.

The Snotty Nose Rez Kids of the Haisla Nation and Inuit singer Elisapie have been long-listed for this year’s Polaris Music Prize, which is awarded for the best Canadian album of the year. The long-list was whittled down from 233 albums made up of all genres regardless of sales.

Elisapie is included for her album The Ballad of the Runaway Girl; The Snotty Nose Rez Kids for Trapline.

Other Indigenous performers were also included.

There are 40 in the running to be short-listed, including Shawn Mendes. The short list of 10 albums will be released July 16.

Indigenous tenor Jeremy Dutcher won the prize last year for his first album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa.

The Polaris winner will be awarded $50,000 on Sept. 16 in Toronto.
