The Manitoba chiefs endorsed Phil Fontaine by electing him to a third term as Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs on Sept. 24, 1994.

Support for Fontaine was overwhelming, 41 to 17, defeating challenger Rob Bushie.

Fontaine said the AMC would concentrate on the process of dismantling the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and the implementation of self-government. The dismantling of DIAND in Manitoba was a pilot project that was intended to serve as a blueprint for the rest of the country.
