Who are you? How do you fit into the changing times? What is your place in the world?
If you have ever wondered these things, perhaps a talk scheduled for Saturday Nov. 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Canadian Native Friendship Centre in Edmonton can provide some answers.
It’s called Gathering Power and it will be presented by Tlingit Elder Phil Gatensby, a self-described peacemaker from Carcross, Yukon.
It’s a presentation about human development, Gatensby told Jeremy Harpe of CFWE-FM. “It’s an empowerment workshop.”
The talk will touch on ‘creating or moving with change.’ Change is something that many people are uncomfortable with, Gatensby said, but change is always happening.
People are changing. Things are shifting, he said. And it’s important for people to understand the change and how they fit into it.
“There’s a thing called ‘singing your own song’ which aligns with that,” said Gatensby. There will also be discussion about the rhythms and patterns of change and “learning to go with the flow of the universe.”
Gatensby said he has been involved in ‘peacemaking’ over the last 35 years, and is involved in traditional ceremony. He says participants will learn to let go of some of the things that are holding them back. And learn to adapt to a new way “of flowing into the future.”
He says he has discovered that his own brain functions by telling him what he can’t do, not what he can do, and he’s had to be conscious of that.
He said the talk will encourage building a path towards peace.
“If we were able to talk to our heart, our hearts would basically say they want us to be happy. They want us to have peace. Our mind on the other hand might say it wants to rule the known universe. So we’ll explore some of those things. We’ll delve into the relationship with the great mystery.
“I’ve traveled around the world basically doing peacemaking work. The stuff that I do is profound in its simplicity…. I’m on a journey of self-discovery like everybody else… I’ve come to this understanding, is that I live in a world if I know more than you it makes me more powerful than you, but in another world if I know more than you and I don’t share it with you then it’s of no value whatsoever.”
That is where he says he’s coming from with the talk.
