Today, and throughout the week, the University of Saskatchewan will celebrate the contributions of Métis, First Nations and Inuit students, staff and faculty.

Events will take place at a number of locations on the campus at Saskatoon from Feb. 5 to Feb. 9. They are open to the public and a list can be seen here https://students.usask.ca/events/iaw.php

Indigenous Achievement Week offers the public an opportunity to experience some of the initiatives that are happening on campus with more than 20 events. This year’s theme is Identity.

This morning will be Round Dance 101 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre. For anyone who has never been to a traditional round dance, this workshop offers a safe space to learn and ask questions in preparation for a celebratory event on Friday.

On Tuesday afternoon, at the same location, the university will host an Indigenous Student Leadership panel. It begins at 2 p.m. Three former students will discuss their experience with leadership at the university and beyond.

On Wednesday Feb. 7 a workshop called Land and Indigenous Identity: Exploring Wanuskewin will provide an opportunity to learn how past generations of First Nations people survived in the cold. The public should register in advance by emailing mailto:iloradanon.efimoff@usask.ca

The Indigenous Student Achievement Awards will be held on Feb. 8 at 2:30 pm at the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre. It will honour and celebrate the academic accomplishments, research endeavors, leadership and community involvement of Indigenous students. This year, 44 Indigenous students will be honoured.

And on Friday at 7 p.m. the Ninth Annual Round Dance will be hosted at the Education Gym, 28 Campus Drive, College of Education. The round dance is the final event of Indigenous Achievement Week and caps off the week with dancing, singing and celebration.
