Grande Prairie RCMP warn residents of e-mail scams

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017 1:30pm

RCMP are notifying the citizens of Grande Prairie of a computer scam that has come to their attention.

This scam consists of an e-mail being sent from the Department of Justice, claiming they are from their online Crown Prosecution Service. The e-mail indicates to the individual they have been summoned to court as a witness and invites them to click on a link to view the case details. Once the link is accessed a virus is installed onto the computer. This is a spam e-mail.

The RCMP would like to remind the public that if summoned to court, documentation will be served in person not via e-mail, text message or via telephone.

Best practice if involved in such an incident is to avoid opening any of the links found within the e-mail and to report it to the appropriate agency. For more information on scams contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or toll free at 1-888-495-8501.

If you believe you may be the victim of fraud contact the Grande Prairie RCMP Detachment at 780-830-5700.
