A drum group that wowed the crowds at the 61st Annual Grammy awards in February has been signed to the Sakamoto talent agency.

Young Spirit, a group from Frog Lake First Nation in Alberta, joins Sakamoto’s international roster.

Young Spirit was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Regional Roots category, but it was their red carpet performance that launched them into the hearts and minds of award watchers.

Founded in 2001, the group was popular on the powwow and round dance circuit across North America.

“Young Spirit (oskiyak ki?sik in Plains Cree) is a modern example of an ageless tradition,” said Sakamoto Agency’s Paul Biro. “We are lucky to experience powerful music and lessons that speak to our hearts when we listen.”

Young Spirit is eager to share their music in new settings, and are available for a range of events and venues. The group’s traditional and original songs reflect the importance of family, community, love, and celebration.

“Life is precious and we all have a choice about how we use our time here on Mother Earth,” said drum keeper Jacob Faithful. So Young Spirit makes the choice to spread joy and healing through music, reads a press statement.
