The Indigenous Youth Wellness Team with the Provincial Health Services Authority in British Columbia announced a free conference for Indigenous youth 18 to 24 from Feb. 15 to 17, 2017. Get an application form here http://www.indigenousyouthwellness.ca/

The conference is hosted within the ancestral, traditional and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh people at the Blue Horizon Hotel in Vancouver.

The goal is to provide a space for Indigenous youth to come together, network and talk about different forms of activism they are engaging in within their communities.

Good Heart, Good Mind focuses on grassroots activism in the form of visual arts.

A large component of the conference will introduce young people to a variety of projects that other Indigenous people are involved with and give them a chance to strengthen their skills in the areas of media, filmmaking, public speaking, web development, develop tools to deal with racism. An important piece of this conference is leadership.

Activism and leadership go hand in hand, and youth will have the opportunity to focus on developing a vision and direction for the leaders they want to be in their community.

The wellness time will also host a simultaneous five-day filmmaking intensive workshop running from Feb 14 to 18, 2017. Under the mentoring of a young Indigenous filmmaker, youth will have the opportunity to learn about the process of making a film from start to finish. This includes story boarding, interviewing, filming, using audio equipment and editing. During the course of the workshop youth will have the opportunity to film at an Indigenous youth conference and to create a short film of their choosing.

WHO CAN APPLY?

-Indigenous Youth Ages 18  to 24 residing in BC

-Successful applicants will receive funding for travel and accommodation for the conference.

Attached are the applications, 1 for the youth conference and 1 for the filmmaking intensive workshop (youth are unable to attend both).
