Alberta Indigenous Games will be held Aug. 13 to Aug. 17 in Edmonton

Organizers of the 2017 Alberta Indigenous Games are in fundraising mode and looking for golfers to participate in their Canada 150 golf tournament on June 23.

The tournament will take place at the Cougar Creek Golf Club in Carvel, Alta. It’s a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m.

“For any avid golfer, this will be a good opportunity to come and challenge people you might know and challenge yourself,” said organizer Martha Campiou.

Register now and support Indigenous youth through sports and culture. First prize wins $1,500. Closest to the pin and longest drive win $250 each.

There is a steak barbeque and silent auction. To register for the golf tournament, call Campiou at 780-497, 2546 or Jordan Cornfied at 597-988-0872.

Campiou said it’s been a bit difficult to get sponsors for the Indigenous Games, given the busy summer ahead and all the activities competing for funding.

“We are hoping that people will come and support the whole event that we are doing for kids. And that’s the main thing… it is for kids,” said Campiou.

The Indigenous Games will be held Aug. 13 to Aug. 17 at Rundle Park, Edmonton for youth ages 12 to 20 years old. Organizers are expecting about 500 participants. There are no restrictions on participation other than the young people must be Aboriginal.

There will be 12 events. The Indigenous Games will feature such sports as lacrosse, fastpitch, softball, volleyball and beach volleyball, Archery, Athletics (Track & Field), Ball Hockey, Basketball, Canoeing, Cross Country, Golf, and Soccer.

Other activities include an Eagle Staff Run, Opening Ceremonies, an entertainment stage, a showcase lacrosse game, career fair, a barbeque and round dance, a talent show, Elders village, cultural arts and crafts village, traditional games, medal ceremonies and closing ceremonies.

Campiou stressed that the games are for the whole family with events each day after the sports are done starting at 5 p.m.
