In an announcement on his Facebook page, Perry Bellegarde, national chief of the Assembly of First Nation, said the July annual general assembly that was to be held in Halifax, is cancelled in an effort to “ensure the safety of First Nations and to respect public health advice.”
He said the decision was made by the AFN executive. “We cannot take the chance of any individuals becoming ill & possibly bringing this virus back home.”
He said the December Special Chiefs Assembly will go ahead as planned and all new business would be considered at that time, “should the virus subsides by then.”
“This was a difficult decision to cancel, but the AFN's top priority is the health and safety of First Nations. We will continue to work on behalf of First Nations in this time of uncertainty.”
