LISTEN: Alberta Indigenous Games set to start Sunday

The Alberta Indigenous Games are set to begin Aug. 11, and Jacob Hendy, the Games CEO, is excited to welcome participants to Edmonton for all the activities.

Hendy estimates there will be about 2,000 athletes from 35 First Nation and Metis communities this year, and that includes 50 teams registered.

Events include track and field, archery, basketball (with more than 500 athletes alone), ball hockey, canoeing, beach volleyball, baseball for juniors, fast pitch, soft ball, and golf, among other sports.

Opening ceremonies is going to be special, with an eagle staff run at 1 p.m. at Rundle Park (2909 113 Ave. NW) with athletes’ grand entry by Treaty group and Metis communities.

The Games run to Aug. 17.
