MKO Supports the Reduction of Plastic Waste in Northern Manitoba

MKO supports Canada’s announcement that it plans to ban single-use plastics throughout the country by the year 2021. 

“First Nations citizens have traditionally been the stewards and protectors of the lands and the waters throughout Canada,” said Grand Chief Garrison Settee.

“At the MKO we are concerned about the long-term health of the environment in Northern Manitoba. Many communities don’t have access to state-of-the-art recycling facilities, so it’s essential that we all do our part to reduce the waste that is being buried in landfills and ending up in our waterways.”

Many First Nations rely on traditional food obtained from lakes, so keeping water healthy is a concern for many communities.

MKO will continue to advocate for its First Nations to have ongoing access to clean drinking water to ensure that citizens are able to safely reduce any reliance they may have on using plastic water bottles.

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is a non-profit, political advocacy organization that has represented 26 First Nation communities in Manitoba’s North since 1981. The MKO represents more than 72,000 First Nations people.
