Contract to March 31, 2025, with possibility of extension.

We’re looking for a dynamic, determined journalist who cares about civic journalism.

This position is for our flagship digital news publication Windspeaker.com. It is a full-time position (in conjunction with funding provided by the News Media grant.)

Description of the journalist position: Indigenous Canada: Civic journalism coverage, including but not limited to First Nations, Métis and Inuit leadership, institutions and governance organizations, sovereignty, politics, courts, including Supreme Court of Canada, policing, justice, education, health, climate and environmental concerns and issues, natural resources, including hunting, fishing, food security, oil & gas, mining, economy, housing and homelessness, social issues, including child welfare. Also arts, film and books.

Reports directly to News Director/Editor Deb Steel. There will be daily online meetings to update progress and determine priorities.

  • Title: General Assignment Journalist
  • Salary: 37.5 hours per week/$40,000 to $45,000 per year, dependent upon experience

Expected working hours: Monday to Friday generally, though coverage over the weekend or after hours may be required depending on stories and breaking news.

Job Requirements

  • A degree or diploma in Journalism from an accredited academic or technical institution OR equivalent experience in print/digital journalism.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous peoples, communities, culture, issues and concerns.
  • Excellent interview and communication skills
  • Excellent writing and research skills: You are a great listener and interviewer
  • Deadline-driven and have an eye for detail
  • Able to work independently, but also able to function within a team setting
  • Critical thinking and ability to analyze issues and to remain impartial
  • Able to understand and report on sensitive/complex issues with wide-ranging Indigenous perspectives and from Indigenous worldviews
  • Passion for news reporting and interest in a range of important topics.
