The Directors Guild of Canada announced their award winners in Toronto on Oct. 26, and Tasha Hubbard, the director of nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, is named the recipient of the Discovery Award.

Nîpawistamâsowin is the story of Colten Boushie who died by gunshot after entering the rural property of farmer Gerald Stanley. Questions about racism within Canada's legal system propelled Colten's family onto national and international stages in their pursuit of justice for him.

There were 12 nominees up for the Discovery Award, which highlights the top new directors to watch during this year’s festival season.

Tasha Hubbard is a Cree filmmaker and educator. She lives in Edmonton and teaches at the U of A Faculty of Native Studies.

There were more than 350 submissions for this year’s 20-plus awards offered by the guild for film and television projects across the country.

The Directors Guild is a national labour organization that represents over 4,800 key creative and logistical personnel in the screen-based industry covering all areas of direction, design, production and editing.
