On Friday afternoon Oct. 18, thousands of Albertans filled the legislature grounds to demand climate action.
Indigenous people led the march with drums and song, and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg voiced her support for local climate work. Marchers, joined by Thunberg, filled four lanes along Jasper Avenue.
"It's incredible to see so many young people and Indigenous leaders gathered here today," Thunberg said, acknowledging the Treaty 6 territory on which the strike occurred.
"You are the hope... I'm very proud to be with you here in Edmonton."
The day's events were organized by young climate activists from local grassroots groups, including Edmonton Youth for Climate, Climate Justice Edmonton, Beaver Hills Warriors and Indigenous Climate Action.
