Man convicted of manslaughter taken back into custody

September 21, 2016. Cold Lake RCMP arrested Garrett Leland Blackman Monday after he failed to return to the Stan Daniels Healing Centre in Edmonton. Blackman had been granted an authorized temporary absence from the healing centre, which is a minimum security federal institution where he had been serving a sentence for manslaughter. He was arrested at a residence on the Elizabeth Metis Settlement. He has been returned to serve the remainder of his sentence and now faces additional charges of being unlawfully at large and obstruction.  Blackman will appear by CCTV on Sept. 27, in Edmonton Provincial Court for being unlawfully at large and by CCTV on Sept. 28, in Cold Lake Provincial Court for the charge of obstruction.

 

Guest professor to speak on the criminalization of Indigenous peoples

September 21, 2016. The University of Alberta will be hosting Dr. Lisa Monchalin, who teaches in the department of criminology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, BC, is the author of The Colonial Problem: An Indigenous Perpective on Crime and Injustice in Canada. Monchalin will talk about the continued over-representation of Indigenous people in the Canadian criminal justice system. Monchalin speaks both nationally and internationally in an effort to effect change and seek justice for Indigenous peoples. Her lecture is at 5 p.m. on Thursday in the Humanities Centre. It is followed by a reception.
