The Athabasca Tribal Council (ATC) in Fort McMurray, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated professional to join our talented Child and Family Services Team for the position of caseworker. THE ROLE:

Reporting to the Casework Supervisor of Athabasca Tribal Council Child & Family Services, this position requires excellent communication, assessment skills and knowledge of the Casework Practice model. Assessment, engagement and collaboration are the cornerstones of the Model. 

The person will undertake ongoing assessment of the child/youth at risk, and families to inform/build the case plan, using strengths-based approach incorporating the three domains of parental Capacity, Child Development and Environmental Factors.

The Caseworker along with the family, the Assessor and the Service team members work to develop the case plan and provide services to the children and families.  

The Caseworker engages families, helps them understand their situation, and works with them to address issues causing the child to be in need of intervention. This position engages child/youth, family and community supports to reduce risk to child/youth, promote permanency and better outcomes for child/youth and families. It also establishes or enhances existing relationships and partnerships in order to provide services to children and families. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES: 

  • Review and/or develop the case plan using the assessment analysis and collaborate with child/youth, family and community supports during a case conference and follow up with subsequent case conferences to monitor the case plan and service provision and ensures the child’s needs are being met;
  • Ensure that case plan goals and tasks are realistic, measurable, time-limits and understandable to all parties in case planning;
  • Measure and record progress toward goals and outcomes to support families in identifying the achievement of case plans objectives;
  • Continually assess the level of risk, make key decision and respond in a timely manner;
  • Identify and connect/refer child/youth and families to appropriate resources;
  • Advocate for child/youth in community and link to services;
  • Prepare and facilitate placement of children being placed outside familial home when necessary for the child;
  • Actively engage in permanency for children in care;
  • Ensure successful transition to adulthood through the completion and implementation of the Youth Transition Plan;
  • Undertake timely/accurate documentation and keep all the records and files up to date;
  • Leads case conferences with multiple disciplines, professionals, family and other services teams;
  • Provide direct services delivery including counselling and mediation;
  • Continually assess the situation to determine the needs and identify the appropriate intervention and supports to meet the needs of each child and family;
  • Continually monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of services and supports for the individual child and family on a regular basis; 
  • Builds and maintains relationship and networks with collaterals in order to provide appropriate timely services;
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with the Police Enforcement agencies;
  • Utilize current technology for documentation (CYIM/CICIO);
  • Undertake court work when required including preparing and serving legal documents, presenting evidence in court, preparing parents and children for court, collaborating with lawyer, seeking legal advice and providing direction to the lawyer on the Agency’s position on how to proceed with the case; 
  • Organize meetings with the supervisor for case consultations and documents discussion and outcomes of formal supervision at the decision points with Supervisors;
  • Provide on-call services after hours & weekends on a rotational basis.

 
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: 

  • Bachelor of Social Work and 1-3 years’ of experience or Social Work Diploma and 4 years’ of experience; possess effective listening and communication skills;
  • Know, interpret and apply relevant legislation, regulations and policy; Possess effective interviewing skills;
  • Present written and verbal information clearly;
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and assessment skills in the planning and decision-making processes;
  • Working knowledge of court systems related to role and responsibility of Child/youth, family and the Caseworker;
  • Have values and beliefs that support the preservation of families and the protection of children and youth;
  • Demonstrate respect, empathy, sensitivity and behave ethically towards clients, colleagues and community members;
  • Know and adhere to the code of conduct and ethics of the organization;
  • Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility and creatively in responding to opportunities, challenges and change;
  • Demonstrate personal responsibility and accountability for decisions made and actions taken within one’s role; 
  • Plan, organize and manage work, set priorities and perform activities in a manner that best uses existing resources and timely;

  • Describe and demonstrate a range of accepted conflict resolution, negotiation and problem solving techniques;

  • Adhere to confidentiality guidelines of the Legislation and organization.
