Grand Chief pledges to press Alberta to implement MMIWG inquiry Calls to Justice

Grand Chief Wilton Littlechild and Alberta’s Indigenous Relations Minister Rick Wilson are now in receipt of the Final Report from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls National Inquiry Commission.

Littlechild, as a former Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner, says he will work on behalf of Treaty No. 6 to ensure the Calls to Justice in the report are implemented within Treaty No. 6 territory with the new elected provincial UCP government of Alberta.

As for the government, a press statement earlier today states Alberta will review the final report.

“This report puts us on a strong path forward to take action with our partners on the high rates of violence against Indigenous women and girls,” said Leela Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women. “Working together, we will build an Alberta where Indigenous women and girls are empowered, valued and feel safe.” 

Wilson thanked participants for sharing their stories and their hopes for a safer future.

“This report amplifies the voices of Indigenous women and girls.”

Alberta’s homicide rate for Indigenous women was more than seven times that of non-Indigenous women between 2001 and 2015.
