This season’s Amazing Race Canada, which will begin its run July 2 at 9 p.m. ET on CTV, will feature a pair who are sure to become fan favorites, an Indigenous couple from Edmonton.

Anthony Johnson (a project consultant) and James Makokis (a doctor) are a married couple from Edmonton who met on Facebook after James was featured in OUT Magazine. They married in 2017.

Anthony attended Harvard and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. James has constantly dealt with the adversities in the medical industry related to being Indigenous. He knew he wanted to be a doctor since the age of four and went through a grueling 13 years of training. He is now trying to break the racism that Indigenous medical professionals face every day, the team’s bio reads.

Their team motto is the Cree word Ahkameyimok.

“It’s a word you say to another person’s spirit to say, dig deep within yourself and find that element of your spirit, that true essence of yourself and exert it and do your best,” said Johnson. “When you do that, that’s when you achieve breakthrough results. That’s when you overcome things that are in your path.”

Anthony and James will join other teams to race around the globe to compete for a grand prize.
