POSITION OVERVIEW:

Spirit North is seeking an outstanding candidate to provide leadership and assume responsibility for the coordination and support of Spirit North program delivery to Indigenous communities across Southern Alberta.

Established in 2017, Spirit North is a national charitable organization dedicated to empowering and inspiring Indigenous children and youth through sport and play. Our vision is health, wellness and a brighter future for all Indigenous children and youth. Programs are developed and delivered in collaboration and partnership with communities for the purpose of improving physical and mental health, increasing community engagement, and building sustainable sport and recreation programs. Our methodology is designed to reduce barriers to participation in sport and recreation such as geographical isolation and socio-economic imitations, while incorporating community traditions, values, and beliefs. Headquartered in Canmore (AB) with a satellite office in Edmonton (AB), our work is guided by our values which are the following:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Regional Director, the Regional Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and supporting the successful development and delivery of Spirit North programs and events in Indigenous communities across Southern Alberta in a manner that demonstrates cultural and historical awareness and sensitivity, and ensures an enjoyable, inclusive, and supported experience for Indigenous children and youth. This position requires travel.

The Regional Coordinator will also:

  • Assist the Regional Director to recruit and guide their region’s Community Program Leaders (CPLs) and Assistant Leaders (ALs).
  • Support CPLs and ALs with any program logistics including, but not limited to: scheduling, transportation, equipment orders and delivery, travel, accommodation, or other.
  • Support the professional growth and development of CPLs and ALs through coaching, mentorship, and training. Empowering them to take ownership of their responsibilities and strive for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with their Regional Director to create a realistic and thought-out budget, and work within the budget to support CPLs with planning and delivery of exceptional programs in existing communities.
  • In collaboration with the Regional Director, identifies areas of growth to develop and implement culturally relevant programs.
  • Work with Spirit North team members and community members to identify opportunities, resources, and partnerships that will bring value and enhance the quality of program design and delivery.
  • Streamline administrative processes and ensure efficient execution of regional program initiatives.
  • Coordinate daily administrative functions, including budget tracking, staffing coordination, and reporting.
  • Lead co-creation processes with any new Spirit North community for the purpose of developing impactful programs based on the community’s unique needs, values, and goals.
  • Plan and oversee any special events (ie festivals).
  • Assist with direct program delivery where and when necessary.
  • Support the CPLs on a variety of administrative tasks.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Priority will be given to candidates with relevant experience and background that aligns with Indigenous communities, culture, and customs. All applicants will be considered regardless of academic background. This role requires a candidate who:

The following experience(s) will be prioritized:

  • Experience in any of the following areas: Indigenous learning, health sciences, child and youth work, education, community development and/or social sciences.
  • Experience in providing support to other team members, coaching and developing, managing, and sustaining regional programs.
  • Experience managing budgets effectively, and planning, delivering and coordinating activities or events.
  • Experience in communicating with Indigenous community leaders and governing bodies.

 

This position requires:

  • A Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check
  • A valid driver’s licence and Drivers’ Abstract
  • Standard First Aid

 

LOCATION:

The successful candidate will be based in Calgary or surrounding areas. This position requires travel.

 

TERM AND COMPENSATION:

This is a full-time permanent position with a benefits package and an annual salary range of $70,000 - $77,000, commensurate with experience.
